The locals of the state are called Uttarakhandi, or more explicitly either Garhwali or Kumaoni by their region or origin. 86% of the total area is covered by mountainous region. The northern part of the state is mostly covered by the Himalayan ranges and glaciers. The official language of uttarakhand is hindi ,which is spoken by almost 43% of the population and the other major regional languages of uttarakhand are Garhwali which is spoken in western part of the state by 23% population and kumaoni is spoken in eastern part of the state by 20% natives.
